In the underbelly of a pet-friendly nation, where over 43 million households include dogs, the cruel and barbaric blood sport called dog fighting is alive and well. It is estimated that there are 40,000 professional dog fighters in the United States and as many as 100,000 amateurs involved, including children and gang-affiliated teens.
Dog fighting is a thriving underground industry that is prevalent across the country in both urban and rural areas. And this isn't just a "pit bull" issue. Many violent criminals start out by abusing animals. Then they shift to abusing their spouse or their child. Studies show that individuals who attend dog fights and regularly witness other forms of animal cruelty are five times more prone to commit crimes of violence against people.
